Institutional rejection of key support on Gold with trapped Asian breakout sellers
Notice how price sweeps the previous low, absorbs sell stops, and aggressive buying creates a massive rejection wick before closing strong.
Aggressive: Enter at the market open of the candle immediately following the pin bar completion.
Conservative: Wait for a 50% retracement of the pin bar's lower wick on an M15 sub-timeframe, or enter upon a break of the pin bar's high.
Placement: Placed strictly below the absolute extreme low of the pin bar wick.
Buffer: Add a 20 to 30 pip (or 2.0 to 3.0 point on XAUUSD) buffer below the wick low to account for institutional spread widening and broker stop-hunting.
Target 1: Recent internal liquidity pool, Asian high, or 1:2 risk-to-reward ratio level.
Target 2: Major H4/Daily supply zone or range EQ (Equilibrium).
During the London open, Gold dipped 150 pips below the Asian session low, directly tapping into an H1 bullish order block. A textbook pin bar formed with a massive lower shadow and a tight body closing near the high. Aggressive breakout sellers were trapped. Entry was taken at the open of the next candle with a 35-pip buffer stop loss. Price rallied aggressively over the next 4 hours, hitting Target 2 for a clean 1:3.8 R:R profit.
A pin bar formed at what appeared to be an H1 demand zone during low-volume Asian hours. However, the level had already been tested twice previously, meaning liquidity was depleted. The pin bar lacked volume confirmation. Subsequent H1 candles broke directly below the pin bar wick low. Smart traders recognized the failed demand, shorted the retest of the breakdown, and captured a massive continuation drop as retail buyers were trapped.
Failure Trigger: The pattern fails if the subsequent candles close below the extreme low of the pin bar wick on the H1 timeframe.
How to Trade The Trap: When the pin bar fails, it transforms into a continuation breakdown setup. Smart money has abandoned the demand zone, allowing traders to flip bias and short the retest of the broken wick low.
Verify price is sitting inside a clean H4/Daily demand zone or order block on XAUUSD.
Locate the Asian session low or equal lows (EQLs) resting just above the demand zone.
Ensure the price sweep and candle formation occur during London or New York open hours.
Confirm the pin bar has a 3:1 wick-to-body ratio and closes in the upper quartile.
Calculate position size ensuring the stop-loss buffer is respected and target yields at least 1:2.5 R:R.

The H1 timeframe on XAUUSD balances noise reduction and institutional execution. M15 often produces fakeouts, while H4 stops are too wide. H1 provides clear structure and aligns perfectly with major session opens.
A valid liquidity sweep penetrates past a visible structural low (such as the Asian low, previous day low, or equal lows) by at least 10 to 30 pips on Gold, triggering resting stop-losses before reversing.
If the body is too large relative to the wick (e.g., a 1:1 ratio), it is not a pin bar; it is a rejection candle or momentum bar. True pin bars require a small real body showing that sellers pushed price down, but buyers completely overwhelmed them before the close.
